Ipanema 58 Sailing Classes
ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising Certification
As an advanced standard for sail training and maneuvering, students will be expected to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in handling yachts. Advanced sail trim techniques will be covered, including the use of force diagrams to determine centers of effort, lateral resistance, gravity, buoyancy, as well as lift and drag thresholds as wind conditions change. Special attention will be given to preparing a yacht for sailing in heavy weather, and if weather permits, students will learn to use asymmetrical cruising spinnakers.
In addition, students are required to have a deep understanding of weather forecast interpretation and local weather observation, utilizing the ship’s instrumentation to track the movement of weather systems in the cruising area.
Considerable emphasis is placed on contingency and emergency planning, particularly in relation to night sailing and coastal passages. Students will learn how to effectively respond to emergencies such as towing, grounding, dismasting, and dewatering.
Night sailing and coastal passages necessitate additional equipment and safety preparations for both the vessel and its crew. This includes properly hoisting and securing gear on deck, inspecting and preparing abandon ship equipment, establishing crew watch-keeping schedules, and anticipating and preparing for customs and immigration procedures, both internationally and within local territories and waters.
